Sydney Kings Secure NBL Championship Despite Injuries to Key Players

The Sydney Kings claimed the National Basketball League (NBL) championship on Sunday, defeating Adelaide 113-101 in an overtime showdown at Qudos Bank Arena. The decisive game-five victory capped off a gripping best-of-five series and delivered another title for the Kings.

The win was achieved amid significant adversity, as several key players—Keli Leaupepe, Bul Kuol, and Tyler Robertson—were sidelined by long-term injuries throughout the championship run. Leaupepe, a powerful center, missed the entire season after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during the pre-season NBL Blitz tournament. Despite this setback, Leaupepe expressed excitement for the team's success and strong motivation to return to the court in the coming season, saying, "I'm hungrier than ever."

According to Kings forward Kouat Noi, the injured players played a crucial role from the bench by providing guidance and energy to less experienced teammates during the playoffs. Noi emphasized their off-court contributions to the team's overall championship effort.

The Kings’ roster remains well-positioned for the future, with key contributors Xavier Cooks, Jaylin Galloway, and Matthew Dellavedova already under contract for the next season. Kuol, Leaupepe, Robertson, and Noi all hold contract options to continue with the team. Kendric Davis, named championship series MVP, has also signaled interest in returning unless he secures an NBA opportunity.

Reflecting on the season, Galloway noted that overcoming injuries became a rallying point and motivation for the core group, suggesting that a healthier roster in the 2026/27 campaign could make the Kings even more formidable contenders.

With their latest title secured, the focus for the Sydney Kings now turns to offseason preparations and the potential for sustained success in the NBL.
