UConn Defeats Illinois 71-62 in NCAA Final Four Showdown in Indianapolis

UConn advanced to the NCAA men's basketball national championship game after defeating Illinois 71-62 in the national semifinal on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Huskies, now 34-5 this season, held off multiple attempts by the Illini (28-9) to rally late in the game. Illinois, making its first Final Four appearance since 2005, struggled with shooting, finishing just 33.9% from the field and hitting 6 of 26 from three-point range. Those struggles proved costly as UConn outscored Illinois by 18 points from beyond the arc.

Illinois briefly took the lead during the first half after a three-pointer from Tomislav Ivisic but failed to sustain momentum. UConn responded with a 13-2 run before halftime, going into the break with a 37-29 advantage. Key moments in the second half included missed opportunities for Illinois to cut into UConn's lead, such as a wide-open three from Ivisic that rimmed out, immediately followed by a UConn three-pointer from Solo Ball that pushed the deficit further.

Keaton Wagler led Illinois with 20 points in what is expected to be his final college game, while Ivisic added 16 points. UConn was paced by Tarris Reed Jr. with 17 points and four three-pointers from Braylon Mullins, an Indianapolis native.

This marks UConn's sixth men's national title game appearance in the last 26 years. The program now has a 13-1 record in Final Four games. If victorious against either Arizona or Michigan on Monday, UConn would claim its third championship in four years under head coach Dan Hurley.

Illinois head coach Brad Underwood expressed disappointment but pride in his team’s achievement in reaching their first Final Four in over two decades. The Illini's season ends after making school history, while UConn moves on to compete for another national title. No injuries were reported, and the tournament advances to its championship round.
