Police Dismantle Major Catalytic Converter Theft Ring in Los Angeles County

Baldwin Park police led the takedown of a large catalytic converter theft ring in Los Angeles County on Tuesday after a nine-month investigation, arresting four suspects and seizing approximately 1,800 stolen converters valued at $500,000, authorities said.

The investigation began in July, following a notable increase in catalytic converter thefts across Baldwin Park. While initial police actions led to a temporary decline, authorities reported a resurgence of thefts by November. The renewed activity prompted Baldwin Park police to expand their probe, in cooperation with other agencies including the Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County sheriff’s departments, as well as the Arcadia, Chino, Montclair, Azusa, and West Covina police departments.

According to officials, investigators identified two pivotal sites: a buyer location in South Los Angeles and a storage facility in Norwalk. On Tuesday, law enforcement agencies executed a raid at the Norwalk storage site, where four individuals were found allegedly loading stolen catalytic converters into commercial vehicles—raising suspicions the parts were about to be transported out of state. One additional suspect fled the scene.

The individuals arrested were identified as Yusel Cutinopenate, 44; Fernando Sanchez, 52; Robinson Echeverría Chavez, 30; and Graciela Sanchez, 46, police confirmed. Authorities stated that the suspects were detained for identification and evidence gathering and have since been released as detectives continue the investigation. Charges are expected in the coming days, pending further arrests.

Lt. David Leon of Baldwin Park Police said a strong case has been established and detectives are pursuing outstanding suspects before submitting the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The investigation remains active as law enforcement works to address catalytic converter theft, a widespread and costly problem fueled by the valuable metals contained in the auto parts.
