Dale Niedermaier, Visionary Behind Chicago’s Park West, Dies at 89
Dale Niedermaier, renowned for transforming an aging Lincoln Park movie house into one of Chicago’s iconic music venues, Park West, died of natural causes on March 22 in Austin, Texas, his family confirmed. He was 89.
Niedermaier became the principal investor in the group that reimagined the theater at 322 W. Armitage Ave. in 1977. Under his leadership through the late 1980s, Park West became a fixture of Chicago’s cultural scene, staging performances from celebrated artists such as Prince, Bob Dylan, U2, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder. The venue also famously hosted the recording of the Chicago Bears’ “Super Bowl Shuffle” in 1985.
Prior to his impact on the local music landscape, Niedermaier and his wife Judy founded Niedermaier, Inc., a design firm known for creating elaborate product displays for high-profile retailers including Henri Bendel, Bloomingdale’s, Gucci, Macy’s, Ralph Lauren, and Tiffany. His keen design sensibility shaped Park West’s distinctive look, which featured a tiered booth interior, compact dance floor, modern marquee, and aluminum-clad facade.
Niedermaier’s partnership with local promoter Jam Productions helped bring top-tier talent to the stage. “He did whatever he wanted to do, and he did it well, in his own authentic way,” said Jam Productions founder Jerry Mickelson.
Born in Chicago on March 7, 1937, Niedermaier attended Lake View High School and the University of Miami before embarking on a diverse career spanning banking, retail design, and entrepreneurship. Beyond his business ventures, he was an avid sailor in the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, a marathon runner, and a motorcycle enthusiast with cross-country adventures.
Niedermaier is survived by his son Jeffrey, daughter Diana Hayden, four grandchildren—including former Blackhawks player John Hayden—and one great-grandchild. The family is planning a celebration of his life.
Park West continues to operate as a prominent Chicago music venue. No further details on memorial arrangements have been released.
