Police Enforce 48-Hour Dispersal Order in Rochdale Town Centre to Curb Youth Antisocial Behaviour
A 48-hour dispersal order was enforced in Rochdale town centre beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, following reports of antisocial behaviour by groups of young people earlier in the week, according to Greater Manchester Police.
The order, which remains in effect until 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, authorizes officers to exclude individuals from the designated area for up to 48 hours if their presence is deemed likely to contribute to crime or disorder. Police said the move is aimed at preventing further antisocial activity and protecting local businesses.
The measures come after police responded to incidents on Wednesday involving groups of youths harassing staff and causing criminal damage in the centre and at a business in Rochdale. Inspector Meena Yasin from GMP’s Rochdale division emphasized that law enforcement will take a firm stance, combining immediate interventions with preventative strategies to address problem behaviour.
Similar incidents have also occurred in other parts of the country this week. In Clapham, south London, around 100 officers responded to large gatherings of teenagers attempting to access shops and setting off fireworks on Clapham Common on Tuesday and Saturday. Police made six arrests in connection with those disturbances and imposed a separate dispersal order in response.
Officers are maintaining heightened patrols in Rochdale town centre aiming to maintain order and ensure public safety over the Bank Holiday weekend. The dispersal order is currently active, with police monitoring the situation closely.
