Matthew Boyd Shines in Frigid Wrigley Field Victory for Cubs

Matthew Boyd delivered a standout performance for the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Wednesday afternoon, pitching 5⅔ innings with 10 strikeouts in 39-degree weather as the Cubs defeated the Angels 6-2 to win their three-game series.

Despite a wind chill pushing conditions even lower and most of the reported crowd of 25,125 bundled in winter gear, Boyd pitched without an undershirt—an unusual decision for such a cold April day. He allowed only two hits, both to Angels shortstop Zach Neto, and gave up two runs, one of which was unearned. Boyd's approach stood in contrast to every other player on both teams, all of whom wore long sleeves under their uniforms, according to Cubs catcher Carson Kelly.

Boyd’s cool composure on the mound extended beyond his choice of attire. After allowing a single to Neto to lead off the game and promptly picking him off—his 12th pickoff as a Cub, the second highest in team history—Boyd retired 16 of the next 17 batters faced. Cubs manager Craig Counsell lifted Boyd after a walk and a second Neto single in the sixth. The Angels managed to push across two runs in the inning, one on an RBI single from Jo Adell and another on an error, but the Cubs reliever ended the threat with a strikeout.

The victory evened the Cubs' season-opening homestand, with Counsell noting that the team's resilience in cold-weather games has become a talking point, referencing both Boyd and Angels pitcher Jose Soriano's recent performances.

As of Thursday, Matthew Boyd was in good health following his strong outing, and the Cubs' rotation appears intact as the team looks to maintain momentum. No injuries were reported, and the series concluded without incident.
