Two Dead in East Garfield Park Shooting, Suspect in Custody
A confrontation inside a home in Chicago’s East Garfield Park neighborhood on Monday night ended with two people dead and one man in police custody, authorities confirmed.
According to Chicago police, the incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. in the 2800 block of West Washington Boulevard. Officials said a dispute broke out between two men, ages 44 and 31, before escalating into violence. Police reported that the older man drew a knife and attacked the younger man, who holds a valid firearm owner identification (FOID) card.
Investigators said the 31-year-old responded by pulling out a gun and firing several rounds, striking the 44-year-old multiple times. A 38-year-old woman who attempted to intervene was also shot; police stated she suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Both victims were transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
A firearm was recovered at the scene, according to police. The 31-year-old FOID card holder was taken into custody following the shooting, and authorities said charges were pending as of Tuesday morning.
This incident comes amid ongoing conversations surrounding firearm use in domestic disputes and community violence in Chicago. Police have not released the identities of those involved, and the investigation remains active.
