Justin Johnson commits to Illinois after state-track breakout

Justin Johnson, an Evanston junior and multi‑sport standout, committed to the University of Illinois this week, becoming the program’s first local pledge in the 2027 recruiting cycle, team and school sources confirmed.

Johnson broke out as a track star last spring with a personal‑best 10.64 seconds in the 100 meters to medal at the IHSA Class 3A state finals and is a returning medalist in the 200. He is a consensus four‑star prospect and ranked the No. 12 player in Illinois’ junior class, according to 247Sports.com.

The 6‑2, 180‑pound defensive back drew seven Big Ten offers on the strength of his game‑breaking speed and athleticism. Johnson said both of his parents attended Illinois and Evanston coach Miles Osei played for the Fighting Illini, but added that no one pushed him toward the decision: “Coach Osei, he didn’t want to tell me to go anywhere,” he said.

Johnson described the recruiting process as “fun” but “stressful,” praising visits and interactions with staff as he weighed his options. He plans to graduate early and enroll at Illinois to take part in spring practice in 2027, while returning for one more high‑school season of track and football — and targeting at least one state gold.

In related moves around the region, Warren quarterback Reed Dangel announced on social media he’ll transfer to Carmel for his senior year; Nebraska commit Trae Taylor left Warren for Millard South after a 4,204‑yard, 50‑touchdown junior season. Two seniors, Simeon receiver Raymond Liggins III and Nazareth quarterback Jackson Failla, said they will reclassify to 2027 and attend The Peddie School and Phillips Exeter Academy, respectively.

All players announced their plans publicly; Johnson will complete his final prep seasons before joining Illinois for spring practice in 2027.
