Estefany Rodríguez Released After $10,000 Bond in ICE Detention Case

On March 20, 2026, attorneys said Estefany Rodríguez, a reporter for Nashville Noticias, was released after paying a $10,000 bond set by an immigration judge in a case that has drawn legal challenges and press advocacy groups’ attention.

Court filings and statements from Rodríguez’s lawyers say she was arrested during a traffic stop on March 4 and transferred from a county jail in Etowah County, Alabama, to the South Louisiana ICE Processing Center in Basile. Rodríguez, a Colombian national who her attorneys say entered the United States lawfully and has lived here for five years, holds a valid work permit, has applied for asylum before her visa expired in September 2021, and has pursued legal status through her U.S. citizen husband. Her legal team and the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition have filed a wrongful detention challenge, alleging violations of her First, Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights; the federal government contends officials had authority to begin removal proceedings and disputes those claims.

Legal papers recount that Rodríguez was held in isolation for several days and describe alleged mistreatment while in custody; they also question the form and timing of arrest paperwork. Attorneys say she was more than 10 days without counsel contact and that an immigration judge set bond earlier this week. Media and press-freedom organizations, including a brief led by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, have warned the detention of journalists may chill reporting; Rodríguez’s lawyers say they will press the wrongful detention case seeking broader protections against similar treatment.
