Fishing Vessel Overturns Off Provincetown; One Rescued, One Missing
Vessel Overturns Off Cape Cod Coast
A commercial fishing vessel named Yankee Rose overturned off the coast of Cape Cod on Thursday, leading to a search operation near Provincetown, Massachusetts. The incident occurred just before noon about three nautical miles northeast of Race Point in Provincetown, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials.
Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received the initial notification that the Yankee Rose had overturned. Coast Guard spokesperson Keira Shantry said that Coast Guard crews reached the area within minutes, working alongside local agencies that also arrived on the scene.
One Person Recovered, Second Still Missing
Two people were on board the Yankee Rose when it overturned. Responders recovered one person from the water. Shantry stated that this individual was transported to higher medical care. The search for the second person from the vessel remains ongoing as Coast Guard units and local partners continue operations in the waters northeast of Race Point.
Authorities have not released additional details about the condition of the person taken for medical treatment. Officials have also not provided further information about the person who remains missing, beyond confirming that search efforts are underway in the area off Provincetown.
Earlier Emergency on Yankee Rose in Provincetown
The Yankee Rose was previously the focus of an emergency response on February 26 while it was docked at a pier in Provincetown. The Provincetown Police Department reported that police and firefighters responded to a call about an unresponsive person on board the vessel.
Responders found two people passed out due to what appeared to be carbon monoxide exposure. Those two individuals, along with six others — five emergency responders and a harbormaster — were transported to a hospital to be evaluated for potential carbon monoxide exposure. All eight people were discharged by the following day.
Provincetown Location and Regional Context
Provincetown is situated at the end of Cape Cod, approximately 115 miles from Boston and about 150 miles from Gloucester by car. Earlier this winter, a commercial fishing boat named Lily Jean sank off Gloucester, resulting in the deaths of all seven people on board. That incident, like the overturning of the Yankee Rose off Provincetown, involved a commercial fishing vessel off the Massachusetts coast.
