Sinkhole Opens on Omaha Roadway

Motorists in Omaha, Nebraska, were trapped in a roadway cavity on Tuesday, Feb. 24, after a sinkhole opened at an intersection in south central Omaha. The incident occurred when the sinkhole suddenly formed in the road and two vehicles were swallowed by the opening.

Security footage from a nearby parking garage camera recorded the moment the sinkhole appeared and the subsequent scene at the intersection. The footage showed the dramatic collapse of the roadway and the involvement of vehicles in the incident.

Immediate Response from Bystanders and Authorities

Seconds after the two vehicles fell into the sinkhole, bystanders at the intersection intervened to assist the people inside the cars. These individuals helped drivers and other passengers exit the vehicles and reach safety before first responders arrived.

First responders came to the scene at around 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 24. According to information attributed to Storyful, there were no injuries reported in connection with the sinkhole incident. Following the collapse, surrounding roads were closed while city officials began assessing the situation.

Omaha Police Acknowledge Public Assistance

Omaha Police publicly commended the bystanders who helped at the intersection in south central Omaha. Authorities noted that some individuals assisted in getting drivers out of their vehicles and moving them to safety. Others directed traffic and encouraged people to move away from the affected area.

In a Facebook post dated Feb. 24, Omaha Police thanked those who assisted, stating that these individuals took the initiative to help fellow residents and acted quickly in response to the sinkhole. Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer was also noted in the post, stating that he is impressed by Omaha citizens helping one another.

The incident in Omaha involved no reported injuries, damage to at least two vehicles, and temporary road closures while officials examined the roadway collapse.
