Investigators Treat Tucson Home of Nancy Guthrie as Crime Scene After Reported Abduction
Investigators Return to Home of Missing Arizona Woman
Deputies with the Pima County Sheriff's Department returned on Wednesday to the Tucson, Arizona, residence of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC "Today" co-host Savannah Guthrie, as the search for the missing woman continued.
Authorities placed yellow crime scene tape around Nancy Guthrie’s home on Wednesday afternoon and brought K-9 dogs to the property. Officials stated they are treating the residence as a crime scene. The sheriff’s office said investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will, and that their working theories include possible kidnapping or abduction.
Timeline of Disappearance in Tucson
According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her Tucson residence at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. Sheriff Chris Nanos said she had dinner on Saturday evening with her daughter, Annie, and son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni. He stated that Cioni drove her back to her home afterward and confirmed that she made it inside.
Nanos said Nancy Guthrie did not attend her usual Sunday church service. A churchgoer notified the family of her absence. Family members then went to her home at around 11 a.m. on Sunday and spent time searching for her. They called 911 at approximately noon.
A law enforcement source reported that there were blood drops leading from the entryway outside the home down the pathway toward the driveway. On Monday, Sheriff Nanos said, “we do, in fact,” and a spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Office later stated that Nanos believes a crime has been committed.
Authorities Pursue Leads and Address Ransom Reports
During a Tuesday news conference, Sheriff Nanos said he did not know where Nancy Guthrie was and declined to answer several questions, including whether a ransom had been demanded. He said investigators were following all leads and reported that they had received hundreds of them.
Following that news conference, the Pima County Sheriff's Department stated it is aware of reports of a possible ransom note after written correspondence was reportedly received demanding a substantial amount of money in exchange for Nancy Guthrie’s return. The department did not provide further detail on the note but confirmed its awareness of those reports.
The Pima County Sheriff's Office has issued a missing person flyer for Nancy Guthrie and is asking anyone with information on her disappearance to contact the department, including via a QR code included on the flyer. The office also urged members of the public with any relevant information to call authorities.
Federal Support and Public Appeals
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump spoke with Savannah Guthrie and, according to the account provided, assured her that every resource would be available in the search for her mother. Savannah Guthrie publicly thanked President Trump for calling her family and expressed gratitude for the efforts of local and federal law enforcement in the ongoing investigation.
The White House posted that its prayers were with the Guthrie family and encouraged anyone with information to contact 911, noting that the search for Nancy Guthrie was ongoing and that authorities were requesting assistance from the public.
Savannah Guthrie addressed the situation in an Instagram post on Monday, writing “We need you,” and asking for prayers for her mother. She referred to Nancy Guthrie as a woman of deep conviction and requested that the public join the family in praying for her.
Aerial drone images taken on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, showed Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson home as the investigation continued. Officials maintained their request for public assistance as they worked to determine what happened to the 84-year-old, whom investigators believe was taken from her home against her will.
