Man Charged in Fatal Stabbing of Pregnant Woman Returned to DuPage County Jail After Self-Inflicted Injuries
Suspect Returned to Custody After Hospitalization
A man charged with the murder of a pregnant woman in Downers Grove, Illinois, was returned to the DuPage County Correctional Facility on Sunday after being treated at a hospital for injuries that authorities say he inflicted on himself.
According to the DuPage County Sheriff's Office, the 19-year-old suspect was cleared for release from the hospital and taken back into custody Sunday afternoon. He had been hospitalized after sustaining injuries in his housing unit at the DuPage County Jail shortly before 5 p.m. on Thursday.
Incident at DuPage County Jail
The DuPage County Sheriff's Office reported that the inmate suffered injuries in his jail housing unit late Thursday afternoon. Medical staff at the jail provided immediate treatment before he was transported to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
A preliminary investigation by the sheriff's office determined that the injuries appeared to be self-inflicted and that no other individuals were involved. Authorities did not release additional details regarding the nature of the injuries.
The inmate is being held at the DuPage County Correctional Facility while awaiting trial in connection with the killing of a pregnant woman in Downers Grove.
Charges in Downers Grove Homicide Case
The suspect, identified as a 19-year-old man from Westmont with the last name Revuckas, was arrested on a Tuesday and is charged with multiple offenses related to the death of a woman named Morales in Downers Grove, located off Ogden Avenue.
Authorities have charged Revuckas with six counts of first-degree murder with intent to cause death or great bodily harm. Additional charges include armed robbery, aggravated arson, intentional homicide of an unborn child, and aggravated cruelty to animals.
Officials stated that an autopsy showed Morales had been stabbed 70 times at her home in Downers Grove. The unborn baby did not survive.
Events Leading Up to the Killing
Court documents and statements from DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin at a Thursday news conference indicated that the events began with a Facebook Marketplace transaction. According to those documents, Revuckas purchased a pickup truck from Morales' husband on a Saturday.
Morales and her husband inadvertently left their license plates on the truck, and arrangements were made for Revuckas to return the plates on Monday, Berlin said. Investigators stated that Revuckas went to return the plates as scheduled on Monday.
Investigators reported that Revuckas told them he got into a fight with Morales about the condition of the truck, attacked her with a knife, and then set the apartment on fire. The Downers Grove residence was identified as the location of the fatal stabbing and subsequent fire.
Additional Allegations and Court Date
The aggravated cruelty to animals charge stems from allegations that Revuckas stabbed and kicked the Morales family pit bull. Officials said the dog was recovering as of Thursday.
Authorities also stated that while in custody, Revuckas cried as he confessed to the killing and showed investigators where he had hidden bloody clothes. He remains in custody at the DuPage County Correctional Facility while awaiting further court proceedings.
Revuckas is scheduled to appear in court again on February 18.
