Man Sentenced for 2015 Sexual Assault in Cadillac
On Monday, a Wexford County judge sentenced Michael Burch, 34, formerly of Hazelton, Indiana, to a prison term of 38 to 60 months for his role in a sexual assault case involving an 11-year-old girl in Cadillac, Michigan.
Details of the Assault and Initial Report
According to state officials and prosecutors, Burch sexually assaulted the 11-year-old girl in 2015 while she was sleeping in a travel camper in Cadillac. The assault was first reported in June 2015. After the report, Burch left Michigan before charges were filed.
Arrest and Operation Survivor Justice
U.S. Marshals arrested Burch in January 2025 in Indiana as part of Operation Survivor Justice. State officials describe Operation Survivor Justice as a statewide initiative launched in 2024. The partnership involves the Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's office, county prosecutors, and the U.S. Marshals Service, and focuses on locating and arresting Michigan fugitives with outstanding sexual assault warrants.
Plea and Conviction
In November, prior to his sentencing, Burch pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree criminal sexual conduct in connection with the 2015 assault in Cadillac. This plea formed the basis for the sentence imposed by the Wexford County judge.
Sentencing Conditions and Monitoring
As part of the sentence, the court ordered Burch to serve between 38 and 60 months in prison. In addition to the prison term, he was ordered to lifetime electronic monitoring. The court also required that Burch register as a sex offender.
Victim Impact and Official Response
Before sentencing, a victim impact statement from the survivor was read in court. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued a statement noting that Burch had been held accountable through Operation Survivor Justice and the survivor's involvement in the case.
