Man Shot by Police After Domestic Incident in Essex
Baltimore County police shot and killed a man late Wednesday night at the Kings Mill apartments in Essex, Maryland, after responding to a domestic-related incident involving a reported stabbing.
Officers were dispatched around 8:30 p.m. to the 900 block of Holgate Drive for a report of a stabbing. When they arrived at the apartment building, police said they encountered an armed man inside.
Police Discharge Firearms and Locate Stabbing Victim
According to a police statement issued Thursday morning, several officers discharged their firearms during the encounter in response to the man's actions, striking him. Once officers entered the apartment, they located a woman suffering from stab wounds.
Both the man and the woman were transported to a nearby hospital. Police reported that the man was pronounced dead at the hospital. Authorities have not yet released his name. On Thursday, police stated that the woman was recovering at the hospital.
Officer Injured and Administrative Leave Implemented
Police reported that one officer was injured during the incident and taken to a hospital. Officials have not released information on the officer's condition.
Authorities stated that, in accordance with department policy, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave. Police also confirmed that all officers at the scene were equipped with body-worn cameras.
Investigators have not yet determined what led to the shooting, and the exact number of officers involved has not been specified. Police said no additional information was available at this stage of the investigation. Essex is located about eight miles east of Baltimore.
Recent Baltimore County Police Shootings
Police reported that Baltimore County officers were involved in other recent shootings. On October 8, six officers opened fire on Robert Adams during a mental health crisis response on Larkhall Road in Dundalk. Officers said Adams was armed and standing at a second-floor window. Body-camera video showed police staking out the home before shots were fired. Adams was later found dead inside the home, and authorities said it was unclear whether he was killed by police gunfire or by a personal weapon.
In a separate November incident, a man armed with a BB rifle was wounded and taken to a hospital after a Baltimore County police officer shot him. Police said officers had received reports of an armed person in the Putty Hill area of Parkville and, upon arrival, encountered the man on White Marsh Boulevard. One officer fired, striking the man, and police reported that a BB rifle resembling a real firearm was recovered at the scene.
