Man Drowns at Centennial Beach in Naperville During Evening Swim

A 27-year-old man died after being pulled from the water at Centennial Beach in Naperville on the evening of Thursday, July 11, 2024. The incident occurred near the beach facility located at 500 W. Jackson Avenue, prompting an immediate emergency response.

According to the Naperville Park District, the man was found unconscious in the water around 6 p.m. Lifeguards and emergency personnel quickly removed him from the water and began life-saving measures. He was transported to Endeavor Health Edward Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released, and authorities have not provided information regarding how the man came to be in distress or how long he may have been submerged before being discovered.

As a precaution and out of respect, Centennial Beach will remain closed on Friday, park officials confirmed. The closure will allow for further review of the incident and provide staff and patrons time to process the tragedy.

Centennial Beach is a popular man-made swimming area repurposed from a former quarry and frequently visited by families and residents during the summer months. Safety protocols are typically in place, including lifeguards and clearly marked swimming zones, though officials have not commented on whether any safety measures were under review in light of the incident.

Local authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the drowning. An autopsy is expected to be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

More information will be released once the victim's family has been notified and officials conclude their preliminary findings.
