Blind Logan Square Man Searches Day and Night for Missing Service Dog After Attempted Theft
A heart-wrenching search is underway in Logan Square, where Angel Santiago, a legally blind resident, is pleading for the safe return of his beloved service dog, Bam Bam, who went missing after an attempted theft in early June.
Santiago, who lives with glaucoma and Type 2 diabetes, relies on Bam Bam not just for daily tasks but also for emotional support. The bond between man and dog is unshakable—making the sudden disappearance of his companion all the more devastating.
“I won’t stop until I find my Bam Bam,” Santiago said, emotion welling in his voice. “He is my heart. He is my world.”
The incident occurred on the morning of June 5, when Santiago heard his backyard gate being opened. He says two men were attempting to take Bam Bam from the yard. In a desperate effort to intervene, Santiago tried to stop one of the individuals, but he slipped in the process, and Bam Bam ran off.
“I tried to hold one of the guys. It did not work, and Bam Bam was getting away,” he said. “Since then, I haven’t stopped looking. Every day, every night, I walk. I fall a lot, but I’ve learned how to fall without hurting myself. I just want my dog back.”
Santiago’s determination has deeply moved neighbors and strangers alike. Volunteers from across the area have stepped up to support him, helping distribute flyers and search for the missing pup.
“It’s the least we could do—spread the word,” said Sheila Przybytek, a local volunteer who has joined the effort.
In addition to Santiago’s relentless search, animal welfare experts are offering guidance on how to approach the dog if spotted. Given how long Bam Bam has been missing, they warn that he may be frightened and skittish.
“Don’t call or chase him,” advised Jeanette Garlow from Lost Dogs Illinois. “Instead, sit or lie down without direct contact. Toss treats to lure the dog closer gently.”
Santiago has taken every step possible to bring Bam Bam home. The dog is microchipped, and all animal hospitals and grooming facilities in the area have been alerted. He walks for hours every day around Monticello and Fullerton, clinging to the hope of a reunion.
“I won’t stop until I find him,” Santiago repeated. “He’s my everything.”
