Emma Raducanu Defeats Wimbledon Champion Vondrousova to Set Up High Stakes Clash with Sabalenka
Emma Raducanu delivered a brilliant performance on Centre Court, defeating reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets to secure a place in the third round, where she will face world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in what promises to be one of the tournament's most exciting matchups.
The 22-year-old British No. 1 came out firing with a balanced mix of power, agility, and court awareness that left her Czech opponent struggling to find rhythm. Raducanu, who had already gained momentum with a confident win over fellow Brit Mimi Xu in the opening round, looked poised and assertive under the spotlight at Wimbledon’s All England Club.
Her performance against Vondrousova, who recently captured the Berlin grass-court title and entered the match in strong form, was a clear sign of Raducanu’s growing comfort on the big stage. From the outset, she used a clever combination of pace variation, shot angles, and tactical movement to control the rallies and keep the 2023 Wimbledon champion on the defensive.
Raducanu broke Vondrousova at 4-2 with a precise backhand down the line, only to drop her own serve immediately after. But the Czech star faltered again, producing two double faults in a row that handed Raducanu another break — a moment the Brit seized, holding serve to secure the opening set.
Reflecting on the victory, Raducanu said, “I think today I played really, really well. There were some points I have no idea how I turned around. I knew playing Marketa was going to be extremely difficult. She’s won this tournament, which is a huge achievement. I'm so happy with how I focused and brought my game to the court.”
Now, Raducanu faces an even bigger challenge in the form of Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed and three-time Grand Slam winner, on Friday. Their upcoming clash will be a major test of Raducanu’s composure and form — and a must-watch for fans as the action heats up in the Wimbledon draw.
