A heartbreaking accident unfolded in northwest Charlotte on the afternoon of Sunday, June 8, as a 12-year-old boy lost his life in a dirt bike crash at a busy intersection. The victim, identified as Mike Malanda, was pronounced dead at the scene after his dirt bike collided with a pickup truck.

Crash Occurred at Oakdale and Auten Roads

The collision took place just after 1 p.m. at the intersection of Oakdale Road and Auten Road, located near the Charlotte Water Supply Treatment plant, north of Brookshire Boulevard. Emergency responders arrived quickly and found a damaged dirt bike and a Ford pickup truck involved in the crash. Officers discovered the young rider lying unresponsive in the roadway.

According to preliminary findings, Mike was riding his dirt bike on the road when he was struck by the pickup truck. Investigators are continuing to look into the circumstances of the crash, and no charges have been announced at this time.

Mike Malanda was a student at Lake Norman Charter School in Huntersville, preparing to enter seventh grade. Known to friends and teachers as “Big Mike,” the young student was cherished for his lively spirit, friendly nature, and warm heart.

In a heartfelt tribute, his school community expressed deep sorrow, remembering Mike as someone who brought joy to everyone around him. “He will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality, playful nature, and kind soul,” the school shared.
