Ragging Sparks Suspension of Three Senior Medics at Pune’s Prestigious Medical College
A troubling case of ragging has come to light at one of Pune’s most respected medical institutions, leading to the suspension of three second-year postgraduate students from the Orthopaedics department. The incident, involving the harassment of four newly joined junior doctors, has triggered an internal investigation and disciplinary action.
The complaint surfaced earlier this week when the parents of the junior doctors reached out to higher authorities, prompting a swift response from the college administration. Within hours of receiving the formal complaint, the college formed a fresh anti-ragging committee to look into the allegations.
Initial findings led to the suspension of the three accused students and their removal from the campus hostel. The disciplinary measure will be in place for six months, pending further investigation.
According to college officials, the alleged ragging occurred inside the hostel where the junior doctors had been staying since joining the department two months ago. The incident came to light when the affected students reported the matter, supported by their families. Statements from all involved parties — including the accused students, the complainants, and their parents — were recorded in detail as part of the inquiry.
The administration has assured that a thorough investigation is underway and that strict action will follow once the final report is submitted. While the current case is under close review, it has also reignited concerns about the culture of hierarchy and hazing that continues to persist in some academic environments, even in institutions with strict anti-ragging policies.
This is not the first time the college has dealt with such issues. Last year, complaints from first-year postgraduate female residents had surfaced, though those were later dismissed as minor disagreements. However, this new case has drawn renewed attention to the need for vigilance and stronger preventive measures.
As investigations continue, the college is under pressure to set an example and ensure that every student, regardless of their year or department, feels safe and respected within the institution.
