Pune Boils as Heatwave Grips City and Breaks State Record
Pune’s Lohegaon area turned into a virtual furnace on Sunday, clocking a scorching 42.8°C — the highest temperature recorded in Maharashtra so far this season. This extreme heat is more than 4 degrees above the usual average for late April, signaling a prolonged heatwave expected to persist until at least May 2.
As the sun blazes down mercilessly, weather stations across the city are reporting intense heat. Areas like Shivajinagar and Pashan also recorded temperatures above 40°C, with at least 10 other stations across the region reporting similarly blistering conditions.
Experts warn that the oppressive weather isn’t letting up anytime soon. Hot, dry conditions are forecast to continue in Pune and much of Marathwada through the start of May. Residents are being advised to take precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours.
Meanwhile, Vidarbha has been placed on yellow alert — not just for heat, but for another kind of weather twist. The region is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall and isolated thunderstorms through May 2. This sudden shift is being driven by a complex mix of atmospheric disturbances — including a cyclonic circulation over Assam, a north-south trough running from Vidarbha down to the Gulf of Mannar, and a western disturbance stretching over Rajasthan.
These overlapping systems are expected to whip up thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching up to 60 kmph in parts of Vidarbha. While the rain might offer brief relief, the intense winds and lightning could pose risks.
With summer arriving in full force and temperatures breaking records, it’s a reminder for people across Maharashtra to stay weather-aware and prioritize safety as the heatwave holds its grip.
