Mayor Mike Johnston Finalizes 2027 Budget Adjustments and Breaks Ground on Sun Valley Riverfront Park
Mayor Johnston Harmonizes 2027 Budget with City Council Additions
DENVER, Colorado — Solidifying a cooperative fiscal framework for the coming year, Mayor Mike Johnston submitted his formal response to the Denver City Council’s budget recommendations in late October 2026, finalizing the city's 2027 municipal spending package. Working closely with council leadership, Mayor Johnston incorporated an additional $2 million in direct operating assistance for Denver Health to support its safety-net healthcare services.
The finalized budget allocates targeted funding for certified 911 dispatch operators, 311 municipal service navigators, and bilingual community staff to shorten emergency response wait times. Additionally, funding was expanded for municipal park rangers to enhance safety, upkeep, and civic engagement throughout Denver’s extensive park system.
Groundbreaking on Phase 1 of Sun Valley Riverfront Park
In western Denver, Mayor Johnston joined District 3 Councilwoman Jamie Torres, the Denver Housing Authority, and community residents to celebrate the official groundbreaking on Phase 1 of the Sun Valley Riverfront Park. Situated along the South Platte River, the transformative $30 million park project converts former industrial land into 11 acres of vibrant public waterfront.
The park design incorporates native riverbank ecological restoration, active flood mitigation channels, river-access paths, athletic courts, and community event plazas. Councilwoman Torres commended the milestone, pointing out that providing world-class open space directly elevates health and recreational equity for Sun Valley residents.
Modernizing Municipal Infrastructure and Airport Facilities
Concurrently, city officials reviewed milestone completions within the Great Hall Project at Denver International Airport (DEN), where a newly opened international arrivals 'meet and greet' pavilion and expanded North Security Checkpoints are accelerating passenger throughput. Mayor Johnston praised airport and city engineering teams for executing capital upgrades that strengthen Denver’s global economic standing.
