San Jose Accelerates Berryessa Transit-Oriented Housing as City Council Evaluates Diridon-Airport Link
10-Story Affordable Residential Development Ramps Up at Berryessa Transit Center
SAN JOSE, California — Expanding transit-oriented residential supply in the heart of Silicon Valley, the City of San Jose marked substantial construction progress in mid-October 2026 on a 10-story, 195-unit 100% affordable housing development at the Berryessa Transit Center. Developed by Affirmed Housing in collaboration with municipal housing agencies, the high-density development provides deeply subsidized apartments for working families, transit employees, and seniors directly adjacent to the BART terminus.
City housing officials noted that high-density developments around major transit hubs represent the city's foremost strategy for easing regional rent burdens while minimizing automotive congestion along Interstates 680 and 880. Structural foundation work and tower crane assemblies are actively moving forward, with completion targeted for mid-2028.
Council Evaluates Zero-Emission Diridon-to-Airport Transit Options
Concurrently, the San Jose City Council and transportation committees evaluated engineering and financial feasibility reports for the proposed Diridon–Airport Connector. The visionary project explores dedicated, automated zero-emission transit systems—such as elevated Glydways pod networks—to transport travelers seamlessly between Diridon Station and San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) in under ten minutes.
Council leaders reaffirmed a fiscally conservative delivery approach, stipulating that while automated airport connectivity is vital for integrating upcoming California High-Speed Rail and BART Phase II passengers, private consortium funding must heavily absorb capital expenditures to insulate the municipal budget.
VTA Advances Silicon Valley BART Phase II Engineering Milestones
Complementing local transit actions, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) finalized contract packages for early utility relocation and deep-shaft preparation on the 6-mile BART Silicon Valley Phase II extension. The multi-station heavy-rail project will extend transit from Berryessa through 28th Street/Little Portugal and downtown San Jose into Santa Clara, transforming regional transit access across Santa Clara County.
