VIA Metropolitan Transit Schedules Public Hearing on Major January 2027 Service Changes

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Expanding multimodal transit access across Bexar County, VIA Metropolitan Transit issued a formal notice inviting community feedback on proposed systemwide route and frequency improvements scheduled to launch on January 11, 2027. VIA announced a dedicated public hearing for Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at the VMC Board Room on 1021 San Pedro Avenue, with written comments accepted through mid-October.

The proposed route modifications streamline passenger transfers, increase off-peak frequencies on high-volume transit arteries, and coordinate local feeder lines with construction progress on the $481 million VIA Rapid Green Line. The rapid transit corridor—connecting San Antonio International Airport (SAT) to the Brooks Transit Center via downtown San Antonio—remains on track to inaugurate fast, center-running bus rapid transit by early 2028.

FAA Awards $40.9 Million for Comprehensive Drainage Reconstruction at SAT Airport

In major aviation infrastructure, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded $40.9 million in federal grant funding to San Antonio International Airport under the Airport Improvement Program. The capital grant finances extensive airfield drainage reconstruction, storm retention basins, and grading improvements designed to prevent apron ponding and erosion during extreme Hill Country rainfall events.

The drainage overhaul forms an essential civil engineering component of the airport’s multi-billion-dollar ELEVATE/SAT Terminal Development Program, which is currently erecting a brand-new international terminal facility and expanded ground transportation hub.

City Council Evaluates Infrastructure Demands and Environmental Protections

At San Antonio City Hall, Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones and City Council members held policy briefings regarding regional stormwater management and municipal utility capacity. Council leaders emphasized that pairing high-capacity rapid transit with resilient airfield civil infrastructure positions San Antonio for sustainable economic and demographic expansion.
