CTA Advances $5.7 Billion Red Line Extension Project to 130th Street Following Historic $1.97 Billion Federal Grant
Transformative Transit Equity for Chicago’s Far South Side
CHICAGO, Illinois — Marking the most significant transit infrastructure investment in Chicago's modern history, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and the City of Chicago are advancing major construction milestones on the landmark $5.7 billion Red Line Extension (RLE) project. Supported by a monumental $1.97 billion Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA) through the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Capital Investment Grants Program, the historic initiative will extend the 'L' network’s busiest rail corridor 5.6 miles south from the existing 95th/Dan Ryan terminal to 130th Street.
For decades, residents of Chicago's Far South Side—including the historically underserved communities of Roseland, Pullman, West Pullman, and Altgeld Gardens—have faced protracted commute times and limited direct rapid transit access to downtown Chicago. The Red Line Extension addresses this multi-generational disparity by delivering modern, electrified heavy rail service that is projected to slash one-way commute times to the Loop by up to 30 minutes, saving everyday riders over 100 hours annually.
Four Accessible Stations and Modernized Transit Hubs
The 5.6-mile extension will construct four brand-new, fully ADA-accessible stations located at 103rd Street, 111th Street, Michigan Avenue (near 116th Street), and a multi-modal terminal at 130th Street adjacent to Beaubien Woods. Each station complex is engineered with cutting-edge civic architecture, featuring expansive natural lighting, weather-protected platform canopies, level-boarding platforms, elevators, real-time train tracker displays, and advanced security surveillance networks.
The new stations will also serve as vital neighborhood multi-modal transit hubs, offering park-and-ride facilities with hundreds of commuter parking stalls, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, sheltered bus turnaround loops for seamless CTA and Pace bus transfers, and secure bicycle storage depots to promote micro-mobility and active transportation.
State-of-the-Art Rail Yard and Maintenance Complex
Beyond trackway and station infrastructure, the project includes the construction of a comprehensive new railcar storage yard and heavy maintenance shop near 120th and Cottage Grove Avenue. Capable of stabling and servicing up to 104 CTA railcars, the facility will significantly increase operational flexibility and systemwide fleet reliability, housing diagnostic bays, computerized wheel-truing machinery, and automated train wash systems.
The construction phase will integrate sustainable engineering practices, including energy-efficient electrical traction substations, stormwater bio-retention systems, noise-dampening acoustic barriers, and native landscaping along the right-of-way to minimize environmental impact on surrounding residential areas.
Economic Catalyst and Generational Workforce Opportunities
Chicago civic leaders and CTA officials emphasized that the Red Line Extension serves as a cornerstone for economic revitalization across the city’s South Side. The initiative is projected to generate more than 25,000 direct and indirect jobs throughout its construction phases, with strict workforce diversity requirements ensuring local hiring, trade apprenticeships, and participation from Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE).
By connecting thousands of residents directly to the regional transit network, educational institutions, healthcare centers, and employment corridors, the Red Line Extension lays the foundation for sustainable community wealth creation, commercial corridor revival, and resilient urban mobility that will benefit Chicagoans for generations to come.
