Milestone Opening for Western Sydney’s Premier Transit Corridor

PARRAMATTA, New South Wales — Delivering on a foundational commitment to connected public transport in Western Sydney, Transport for NSW and the New South Wales Government have officially commenced revenue passenger operations on the $2.875 billion Parramatta Light Rail Stage 1. The landmark 12-kilometre twin-track system features 16 fully accessible stops, forging a high-frequency transit link between the Westmead Health and Innovation Precinct and Carlingford via the bustling commercial center of Parramatta.

Connecting major population centers and employment generators across Western Sydney, the light rail network operates with turn-up-and-go convenience, offering services every 7.5 minutes during peak periods from 5:00 AM until 1:00 AM daily. Passengers tap on seamlessly using Opal cards and contactless payment devices across all stations, integrating Western Sydney's light rail directly into Greater Sydney's multi-modal transit ecosystem.

Wire-Free Battery Trams Preserving Historic 'Eat Street' and Cumberland Precinct

A defining technical triumph of Parramatta Light Rail Stage 1 is its sophisticated catenary-free, wire-free operation. Operating along the pedestrianised outdoor dining corridor of Church Street ('Eat Street') and through the heritage grounds of the Cumberland Hospital Precinct, the light rail eliminates overhead electrical wires and supporting poles entirely, preserving historic sightlines and urban tree canopies.

The system is serviced by a fleet of 13 custom 45-metre CAF Urbos 100 light rail vehicles (LRVs) equipped with roof-mounted lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS). As the trams cruise along wire-free segments, the advanced batteries propel the vehicles seamlessly before recharging automatically via rapid overhead pantographs stationed along conventional track sectors and terminus points.

Connecting Healthcare, Universities, and Sports Hubs with Active Transport

The 16 modern light rail stations link several of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest educational, sporting, and healthcare facilities. Commuters can travel effortlessly between Westmead Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Western Sydney University campuses at Westmead and Rydalmere, CommBank Stadium, Riverside Theatres, and the vibrant Parramatta Square civic hub.

In addition to rail infrastructure, the project delivered an 8.5-kilometre shared walking and cycling path between Carlingford and Parramatta, breathing new life into the decommissioned Carlingford heavy rail alignment. Complete with secure bike storage, native landscaping, and solar LED pathway lighting, the active transport link provides safe, green commuting options for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Catalyzing Sustainable Growth Across Greater Western Sydney

NSW transport authorities highlighted that Stage 1 serves as the crucial opening phase in transforming Parramatta into Sydney’s true 'Central River City.' By providing an attractive alternative to private car ownership, the line takes thousands of vehicular trips off arterial corridors like Victoria Road, Windsor Road, and Parramatta Road every single day.

With planning approvals already advancing for Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2—which will extend the network an additional 10 kilometres from Camellia to Olympic Park via Melrose Park and Wentworth Point—Stage 1 establishes the benchmark for sustainable, transit-oriented development across New South Wales.
