Valley Metro Sets October 26 Service Upgrades as Phoenix Allocates $15M Housing Trust Fund
Valley Metro Finalizes Major October 26 Transit Expansion and Microtransit Zones
PHOENIX, Arizona — Expanding modern mobility options across the Valley of the Sun, Valley Metro and the City of Phoenix Public Transit Department finalized comprehensive transit service upgrades scheduled to take effect on October 26, 2026. The service revisions introduce localized on-demand microtransit zones across three underserved Phoenix neighborhoods, offering app-based, curb-to-transit connections for short neighborhood trips.
The adjustments also increase frequency and optimize timetables for Phoenix RAPID commuter bus routes, connecting outlying residential areas to downtown employment centers. Concurrently, regional transit planners progressed public open-house feedback for the West Phoenix Light Rail Extension, prioritizing high-capacity rail along the vibrant Indian School Road commercial corridor over previous alignment proposals to connect dense residential neighborhoods directly to regional healthcare and universities.
Mayor Gallego and City Council Direct $15 Million to Housing Trust Fund
In housing affordability, Mayor Kate Gallego and the Phoenix City Council advanced execution of the city’s 2026–2027 fiscal blueprint, which commits a record $15 million to the Housing Trust Fund. The capital supports the overarching Housing Phoenix Plan, an aggressive civic blueprint targeting the creation or preservation of 50,000 affordable homes by 2030.
The City Council also funded an innovative pilot program that master-leases 50 apartment units directly from private landlords to facilitate rapid, stable transitions for unhoused families, while expanding low-interest gap financing for workforce starter home developments across Maryvale and South Phoenix.
Sustainable Infrastructure Backs Booming Advanced Technology Economy
On civil engineering fronts, municipal teams accelerated water recycling facilities and cool-pavement applications, complementing Phoenix's rapid emergence as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub. Transit leaders noted that integrating shaded bus shelters, high-capacity light rail corridors, and attainable housing protects community well-being in the face of urban growth.
Mayor Gallego reaffirmed that coordinating microtransit connectivity, sensible zoning reforms, and housing preservation safeguards Phoenix’s livability for generations to come.
