Sovereign Handover Marks Completion of Landmark Medical Complex Phase 1

MONACO-VILLE, Monaco — In a momentous milestone for sovereign public healthcare and civil architecture, the Prince’s Government of Monaco, under the high patronage of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II, has celebrated the official handover of the first completed building of the New Princess Grace Hospital Centre (Nouveau Centre Hospitalier Princesse Grace - NCHPG). With an overall investment exceeding €1 billion, the project represents one of the most technologically ambitious public works in the Principality’s history.

During a formal ceremony attended by state dignitaries, hospital administrators, and clinical department heads, Prince Albert II presented the symbolic keys of the new 10-storey, 40,000-square-metre structure to hospital leadership. The handover marks the transition from heavy civil construction to the comprehensive operational commissioning phase, moving Monaco one decisive step closer to inaugurating its next-generation medical flagship.

Intensive 'Marche à Blanc' Dry-Run and Clinical Systems Calibration

The facility has officially entered its crucial 'marche à blanc' (dry-run) phase, an exhaustive multi-month protocol dedicated to testing and certifying every technical, safety, and clinical system before welcoming patients. Medical teams, biomedical engineers, and nursing leadership are conducting full-scale simulation drills across emergency intake pathways, intensive care units, and specialized operating theatres.

Teams are calibrating next-generation diagnostic imaging equipment—including ultra-high-field MRI machines and advanced robotic surgical suites—while verifying medical fluid networks, sterile air ventilation systems, and redundant emergency electrical backup grids. Staff training is proceeding around the clock to familiarize clinical personnel with automated digital patient management workflows ahead of the first patient admissions in early 2027.

Healing Architecture and Panoramic Mediterranean Views

Designed by renowned architectural consortium AIA Life Designers in collaboration with Monegasque architect Fabrice Notari, the new hospital complex is perched majestically on the cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Engineered around the concept of 'healing architecture,' patient rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows that maximize natural daylight and offer restorative sea vistas proven to accelerate patient recovery times.

Once the multi-phased master plan reaches full completion, the NCHPG will offer an expanded capacity of nearly 490 beds, replacing aging legacy infrastructure built in the mid-20th century. The complex incorporates comprehensive acoustic insulation to shield recovery suites from urban noise, landscaped therapeutic roof gardens, and an automated pneumatic tube and robotic delivery network for pharmaceuticals and laboratory samples.

Pioneering High Environmental Quality (HQE) Standards in Healthcare

Setting a new environmental benchmark for European hospital design, the NCHPG is built to achieve rigorous High Environmental Quality (HQE) Médipôle certification. The structure incorporates advanced seismic dampeners and is integrated directly with Monaco’s innovative seawater heat pump thermal loop, utilizing Mediterranean sea water to provide over 80 percent of the facility’s heating and cooling without burning fossil fuels.

Government ministers and medical directors emphasized that the delivery of the New Princess Grace Hospital ensures the Principality remains at the absolute forefront of world-class, human-centric medical excellence and environmental sustainability for generations to come.
