Seattle Unveils Landmark Overlook Walk Bridging 100-Foot Vertical Bluff Between Pike Place Market and Revitalized Elliott Bay Waterfront Park
Reconnecting Downtown Seattle to Elliott Bay After Viaduct Demolition
SEATTLE, Washington — In a transformative civic milestone defining the city's coastal future, the City of Seattle and the Office of the Waterfront and Civic Projects have officially opened the landmark Overlook Walk. Constructed directly over the footprint of the demolished Alaskan Way Viaduct double-decker highway, this generational pedestrian bridge and elevated park surmounts a challenging 100-foot vertical bluff, delivering the first direct, universally accessible connection between world-famous Pike Place Market and the revitalized 20-acre Waterfront Park on Elliott Bay.
For more than half a century, the elevated concrete freeway isolated downtown Seattle's historic market district from the Puget Sound shoreline with noise, exhaust, and heavy vehicle traffic. The opening of the Overlook Walk permanently erases that barrier, allowing hundreds of thousands of residents and international visitors to stroll effortlessly from downtown retail streets directly to the scenic waterfront promenade without navigating steep stairs or crossing busy arterial roadways.
Panoramic Public Realm and Sustainable Landscape Architecture
Designed as both an urban pathway and a destination park, the Overlook Walk offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic vistas spanning Elliott Bay, the snow-dusted Olympic Mountain range, Mount Rainier, and the Seattle Great Wheel. The elevated public promenade integrates gently graded walkways compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, ensuring that families with strollers and visitors using wheelchairs enjoy uninterrupted access throughout the multi-tiered landscape.
The engineering design incorporates terraced seating plazas, children's nature play zones, and extensive landscaping featuring salt-tolerant native Pacific Northwest trees, ferns, and coastal grasses. Strategically placed stormwater bioswales capture and naturally filter rainwater runoff before it discharges into Puget Sound, advancing Seattle's stringent environmental stewardship guidelines.
Integration with the Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion and Local Retail
A centerpiece of the project’s urban design is its seamless integration with the newly completed Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion. The Overlook Walk literally traverses the roofscape of the marine conservation center, giving pedestrians an intimate look at rooftop garden habitats while offering direct elevator and staircase descent to the aquarium's main public entrance.
Along the primary walking concourses, the city has integrated dedicated concession spaces designed to host local micro-businesses, Indigenous artisans, and regional food purveyors. Operating in partnership with the Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority (PDA), these retail pavilions extend the market’s celebrated merchant culture directly onto the waterfront.
Multimodal Urban Mobility and Long-Term Civic Renaissance
Civic and transport authorities emphasized that the Overlook Walk represents the crown jewel of Seattle’s comprehensive $800+ million Waterfront Program. The elevated connection establishes seamless pedestrian transit interchange with Washington State Ferries at Colman Dock, the King County Water Taxi, and regional light rail services operated by Sound Transit at Westlake and Pioneer Square stations.
By transforming an obsolete concrete highway corridor into a vibrant, people-centered coastal greenway, Seattle has established a world-class standard for modern urban revitalization, climate-conscious landscape architecture, and inclusive civic space.
