Trinity Metro Sets October 29 Groundbreaking for 2.1-Mile TEXRail Medical District Extension

FORT WORTH, Texas — Expanding passenger commuter rail into the largest healthcare and bioscience employment cluster in Tarrant County, Trinity Metro officially scheduled the groundbreaking ceremony for the TEXRail Medical District extension on October 29, 2026. The 2.1-mile southern expansion extends passenger service from the historic Fort Worth T&P Station directly to Near Southside, providing seamless rail connections to major hospital systems including Baylor Scott & White Health, JPS Health Network, and Cook Children’s Medical Center.

A public-private land partnership with Baylor Scott & White Health secured the essential platform site, positioning the project for passenger service by 2029. The milestone arrives as TEXRail celebrates surpassing one million annual riders for the first time since commencing operations in 2019, reflecting surging regional adoption of car-free commuter rail.

Panther Island Form-Based Zoning Standards Slated for City Council Consideration

On waterfront redevelopment, the Fort Worth City Council prepared to consider updated Panther Island Form-Based Zoning Standards and Guidelines on October 13, 2026. The regulatory blueprint establishes architectural standards, maximum building heights, public promenade buffers, and transit integration mandates across 300 acres of future waterfront parcels created by the Trinity River bypass channel.

Heavy excavation crews with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Tarrant Regional Water District continued continuous earthwork on the 1.5-mile floodway channel near the Main Street Bridge, protecting downtown Fort Worth from 100-year flood events while unleashing transformative commercial and residential growth.

TRE Double-Track Construction Accelerates Between Fort Worth Central and Trinity Lakes

Complementing commuter rail growth, Trinity Metro progressed early civil construction on the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) Double-Track Project. Adding 2.5 miles of second mainline track between Fort Worth Central Station and Trinity Lakes Station, the capital enhancement will eliminate freight conflicts and boost passenger train reliability between Fort Worth and Dallas ahead of completion in late 2027.

City and transit officials underscored that synchronizing passenger rail expansions, flood control engineering, and visionary waterfront zoning ensures Fort Worth maintains its robust economic trajectory as a city of over one million residents.
