San Antonio International Airport Wins Largest Federal Safety Award in History

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Propelling the largest aviation capital expansion in South Texas history, the City of San Antonio Aviation Department announced in October 2026 that San Antonio International Airport (SAT) has secured over $43 million in federal aviation infrastructure grants. The award represents the single largest federal safety grant in the airport’s history and directly supports runway safety areas, taxiway rehabilitations, and airfield lighting enhancements.

The federal funds accelerate the ongoing $2.5 billion ELEVATE/SAT expansion program, which centers on the construction of a brand-new Terminal C slated for completion in 2028. Following the city's historic issuance of $866.4 million in airport revenue bonds, construction crews advanced foundation piers for the 17-gate international terminal and progressed site work on a new 2,700-space parking structure and consolidated ground transportation center.

VIA Rapid Green Line Pours Dedicated Center-Running Transit Guideways

In metropolitan surface transit, VIA Metropolitan Transit achieved significant construction milestones along the 10.35-mile VIA Rapid Green Line corridor. Heavy civil contractors poured reinforced concrete for dedicated center-running bus rapid transit lanes along San Pedro Avenue, preparing to launch high-frequency Advanced Rapid Transit (ART) in 2028 linking the airport directly through downtown to the historic South Side Missions.

Transit planners noted that the project incorporates 26 architecturally distinct stations equipped with level-boarding platforms, off-board digital ticketing turnstiles, and intelligent traffic signal priority. When operational, the Green Line will bypass congested arterial traffic, cutting cross-city transit travel times by over 25 percent.

City Advances 2026 Fiscal Blueprint and Strategic Housing Implementation Plan

At San Antonio City Hall, Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones and the City Council implemented the city's $4.4 billion municipal budget, prioritizing public safety staffing, street resurfacing, and flood control drainage. Simultaneously, the city reported passing 41 percent of its 10-year Strategic Housing Implementation Plan (SHIP) goal, preserving and constructing thousands of income-restricted homes across Bexar County.

Civic and economic leaders praised San Antonio’s coordinated execution across world-class aviation gates, rapid transit corridors, and attainable housing initiatives.
