Alamo Trust Crafts Immersive Galleries Inside Historic Crockett and Woolworth Buildings

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Transforming the historic heart of downtown San Antonio into a premier international cultural destination, the Alamo Trust and the City of San Antonio advanced interior architectural buildouts and gallery fabrication in October 2026 for the $550 million Alamo Plan. Centered on the repurposing of the historic Crockett and Woolworth buildings, the future 160,000-square-foot Alamo Visitor Center and Museum reached key exhibit integration stages following the ceremonial topping out of its structural steel framework earlier in the year.

Curatorial teams confirmed that the nine-level facility will showcase the world-renowned Phil Collins Collection and the Donald and Louise Yena Spanish Colonial Collection across interactive galleries. Features include a dynamic 4D sensory theater, educational classrooms, and an observation event space overlooking the iconic Alamo church and reconstructed Long Barrack, gearing up for its grand public opening in spring 2028.

$550 Million Alamo Plan Revitalizes Historic Plaza and Pedestrian Promenade

The museum buildout complements recently unveiled civic amenities, including the pedestrianized Alamo Promenade and the Texas Cavaliers Education Center, which welcomes tens of thousands of school children annually. Urban planners noted that closing historic Alamo Plaza to vehicular traffic has restored reverence and pedestrian tranquility to the 1836 battlefield grounds while dramatically increasing foot traffic for surrounding downtown merchants, restaurants, and hotels.

Preservation specialists also continued meticulous non-destructive moisture monitoring and mortar conservation across the fragile limestone walls of the 300-year-old mission church, ensuring the UNESCO World Heritage site remains protected against environmental degradation.

VIA Rapid Green Line Lays Dedicated Guideways Along San Pedro Transit Corridor

Directly connected to downtown visitor and workforce mobility, VIA Metropolitan Transit advanced heavy civil engineering on the 12-mile VIA Rapid Green Line. Crews poured dedicated center-running concrete transit lanes along San Pedro Avenue, preparing to launch high-frequency Advanced Rapid Transit (ART) in 2028 that will connect the San Antonio International Airport directly through downtown to the historic Missions. City and civic leaders praised the synchronized investments, underscoring that San Antonio is honoring its historic heritage while engineering a dynamic multimodal future.
