IndyGo Mobilizes Station Foundation Construction on 24-Mile Blue Line BRT

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — Expanding rapid mass transit across Marion County's primary east-west commercial corridor, IndyGo mobilized advanced civil construction and station foundation installation in October 2026 for the 24-mile Blue Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. Stretching along Washington Street (U.S. 40), the $500 million transit line will provide high-speed, direct electric bus connections linking Cumberland, downtown Indianapolis, and the Indianapolis International Airport.

Contractors progressed complex subterranean sewer and storm drainage upgrades beneath Washington Street to protect corridor pavements from future utility cuts. Concurrently, specialized foundation crews began pouring heavy concrete footings for permanent ADA-accessible passenger stations featuring heated boarding platforms, raised curbs for level boarding, full canopy weather protection, and high-visibility security surveillance systems, keeping the project on schedule for full passenger service in 2028.

Autumn 2026 Network Schedule Optimizations Enhance Transit Reliability

To ensure systemwide on-time performance while accommodating major street construction detours, IndyGo implemented targeted autumn schedule and routing modifications across six key local bus routes, including Routes 5, 21, 25, 26, 30, and 82. The timetable adjustments recalibrate run times to reflect real-time traffic conditions, improving arrival predictability for hospital workers, retail employees, and students.

The agency also completed facility enhancements at the Julia M. Carson Transit Center in downtown Indianapolis, upgrading customer service kiosks, digital departure display screens, and passenger boarding bays to streamline transfers between local buses and the operational Red and Purple rapid transit lines.

Pedestrian Infrastructure and Neighborhood Corridors

In coordination with the City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works, the Blue Line scope includes comprehensive reconstruction of dozens of miles of ADA-compliant sidewalks, modern pedestrian crosswalk signals, and street resurfacing along historic Washington Street. City-County Council representatives highlighted that these concurrent infrastructure investments revitalize aging streetscapes and provide safe pedestrian access to local small businesses across the Near West and Near East sides.

Transportation officials and community leaders commended IndyGo for delivering durable infrastructure improvements, noting that the Blue Line BRT will serve as an enduring catalyst for economic opportunity and clean urban mobility across Indianapolis.
