CATS Implements Major Better Bus Service Expansion on October 5 with 15-Minute Headways and Contactless Fare Validators
CATS Debuts Major Better Bus System Improvements Starting October 5
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — Delivering a major boost to public transit frequency, span, and reliability across Mecklenburg County, the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) finalized preparations to deploy a wide-ranging package of bus service enhancements beginning Monday, October 5, 2026. Funded by the community's voter-approved transit investments, the rollout marks the latest phase of the 'Better Bus Program,' designed to transform Charlotte's bus network into a modern, high-frequency mass transit grid.
Central to the October service update is the expansion of core transit corridors to 15-minute all-day headways on heavily traveled routes, including Route 5 (Airport Sprinter) linking Uptown to Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Route 9 (Central Avenue) serving East Charlotte's dense commercial spine. The agency is also introducing new midday service frequencies along Independence Boulevard and North Mecklenburg, while debuting a dedicated CATS Micro on-demand transit zone in West Charlotte to address suburban first-mile and last-mile connectivity.
Deployment of Electronic Ticket Validators for Contactless Fare Capping
Complementing network service expansions, CATS commenced the active installation of next-generation electronic ticket validators aboard its entire fleet of buses, CityLYNX Gold Line streetcars, and LYNX Blue Line light rail platforms. Part of a comprehensive 12-to-18-month Fare Modernization program authorized earlier this year, the digital hardware supports tap-to-pay credit card and smartphone transactions alongside automatic fare-capping rules that protect low-income and daily commuters from paying more than the cost of a day or monthly pass.
To assist riders with the digital ticketing transition, CATS deployed trained Fare Ambassadors at major transit centers to provide hands-on rider education and ensure seamless boarding without cash transaction delays.
Atherton Mill Station Construction and Governance Transition
On the rail front, heavy engineering progressed smoothly on the infill Atherton Mill Station along the LYNX Blue Line in South End, on track for passenger opening in 2028. Simultaneously, municipal leaders and regional stakeholders advanced the structural governance transition of CATS into the independent Mecklenburg Public Transportation Authority (MPTA), establishing long-term regional fiscal autonomy.
Civic advocates commended CATS for executing tangible improvements across bus frequency, digital fare convenience, and rail expansion, ensuring Charlotte's transit network keeps pace with regional growth.
