Canberra Advances Light Rail Stage 2A as Rail Tracklaying Completes Across Commonwealth Avenue and Modern Station Canopies Rise at Commonwealth Park
Civil Engineering Milestone for the Nation’s Capital Transit Spine
CANBERRA, Australian Capital Territory — The ACT Government and delivery consortium Canberra Metro have achieved a critical civil construction milestone on the Canberra Light Rail Stage 2A project, completing extensive rail tracklaying across the newly reconfigured intersection of London Circuit and Commonwealth Avenue. Building directly upon the successful completion of the landmark Raising London Circuit project—which elevated the road level by six meters to form a level, pedestrian-friendly boulevard—crews are actively laying permanent dual tracks along the 1.7-kilometer southward extension from the current terminus at Alinga Street to Commonwealth Park.
The progress represents a pivotal step in expanding Canberra's zero-emission mass transit network south of Lake Burley Griffin, creating a connected, urban public transport backbone for the Australian capital.
Three Purpose-Built Stations and Modern Architectural Canopies
Stage 2A introduces three brand-new, architecturally designed light rail stops: Edinburgh Avenue, City South, and Commonwealth Park. Civil contractors have already erected the distinct structural steel canopies at the Commonwealth Park and City South stations, featuring integrated weather protection, high-definition digital passenger journey displays, energy-efficient LED platform lighting, and accessible audio induction loops.
Complementing station construction, expansive public realm revitalization works have officially opened along the historic Sydney and Melbourne building colonnades, providing widened, tree-lined pedestrian footpaths, dedicated cycleways, and outdoor dining precincts that enhance pedestrian vitality in Canberra's commercial core.
Wire-Free Battery Propulsion and Heritage Corridor Preservation
A distinctive technical highlight of Stage 2A is the deployment of advanced wire-free light rail propulsion. To preserve the designated national heritage vistas and architectural symmetry along the Commonwealth Avenue Parliamentary Triangle, light rail vehicles operating between Edinburgh Avenue and Commonwealth Park will drop their pantographs and operate exclusively on high-capacity onboard lithium-ion traction batteries.
The existing CAF Urbos 3 fleet has been retrofitted with onboard energy storage systems (OESS), supported by rapid inductive charging infrastructure embedded within platform trackways to recharge batteries during passenger boarding windows.
Stepping Stone Toward Woden Light Rail Extension
With civil works on Stage 2A tracking toward scheduled completion in 2027 followed by systems testing ahead of passenger operations in early 2028, the ACT Government is concurrently advancing environmental and planning approvals for Stage 2B. The subsequent stage will carry light rail across Lake Burley Griffin via a newly dedicated bridge, traversing the Parliamentary Triangle through to the major town centre of Woden. ACT transport ministers emphasized that modern light rail is reshaping Canberra into a vibrant, sustainable, and connected 21st-century city.
