Principality Completes Historic Shift to 100% Zero-Emission Urban Transit

LA CONDAMINE, Monaco — Advancing toward the Principality’s ambitious climate goals mandated by H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the Prince’s Government of Monaco and the Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco (CAM) have marked a pivotal environmental milestone: the complete transition of the national urban bus network to 100% zero-emission electric vehicles. Operating along the busy waterfront arteries of Port Hercule in La Condamine and across all six principal domestic transit routes, the fleet of silent, battery-electric buses now delivers fully decarbonised public mobility throughout the two-square-kilometre sovereign state.

The milestone forms a cornerstone of Monaco's White Paper on the Energy Transition, which legally commits the Principality to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. By eliminating diesel-powered public transit entirely, the initiative removes hundreds of metric tons of carbon dioxide and particulate exhaust emissions from the densely populated Mediterranean coastline every year.

Next-Generation Electric Fleet and Rapid In-Depot Charging Infrastructure

The all-electric CAM fleet comprises advanced 12-metre standard and articulated electric buses manufactured by leading European clean-mobility specialists, alongside agile electric minibuses engineered specifically to navigate the steep gradients and narrow historic streets of Monaco-Ville and Monte-Carlo.

The vehicles are equipped with high-energy-density lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery systems capable of full-day operational duty cycles on a single charge. Charging infrastructure is orchestrated through automated overnight charging gantries at CAM’s central operational depot, supplemented by smart opportunity charging stations situated at strategic route termini.

100% Sourced From Renewable EGEO Power and Thalassothermal Energy

In partnership with Monaco’s national utility provider, SMEG (Société Monégasque de l'Électricité et du Gaz), the entire electricity demand for the electric bus fleet is certified 100% renewable under the EGEO green power framework. The electricity is generated through French and regional hydropower, solar, and onshore wind assets, guaranteeing true well-to-wheel zero-emission transit.

Furthermore, CAM's depot and Port Hercule terminal buildings are integrated into the Principality’s expanding thalassothermal heat loop network, which utilizes seawater from the Mediterranean Sea for energy-efficient heating and air cooling, optimizing municipal electricity consumption during extreme summer and winter temperatures.

Smart Transit Innovation and Elevated Urban Quality of Life

Beyond environmental sustainability, the zero-emission buses provide a significantly enhanced transit experience for residents and millions of annual visitors. The electric drivetrains virtually eliminate engine vibration and ambient noise, creating peaceful streetscapes along Port Hercule and luxury retail districts.

Each vehicle features free onboard high-speed Wi-Fi, low-floor accessibility ramps, digital tactile infotainment displays, contactless smartphone fare payment, and real-time passenger tracking integrated into the Monapass national digital mobility application. Government officials emphasized that the successful electrification of the bus fleet demonstrates how dense urban territories can achieve complete transit decarbonization without compromising reliability or passenger service excellence.
