LAX Automated People Mover Achieves 99.6% Construction Completion as Elevated Electric Train System Enters Final 30-Day Testing Ahead of Early 2027 Launch
Subterranean and Elevated Rail Testing Reaches Final Operational Phase
LOS ANGELES, California — In a transformative development for Southern California's transportation network, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and development consortium LINXS have confirmed that the $3+ billion LAX Automated People Mover (APM) project has reached 99.6% construction completion. Engineering crews and system safety technicians have officially initiated the critical final phase of dynamic system integration, working toward a mandatory 30 consecutive days of continuous, flawless trial testing required prior to welcoming commercial airline passengers in early January 2027.
The centerpiece of LAX’s comprehensive multi-billion-dollar Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP), the 2.25-mile elevated dual-guideway railway will provide seamless, zero-emission mass transit connectivity across six purpose-built stations, completely revolutionizing mobility into and out of the world’s fifth-busiest airport ahead of major international sporting events including the 2027 Super Bowl and the 2028 Summer Olympic Games.
Seamless Connectivity Across Central Terminals and Transit Hubs
The automated electric train system is designed to eliminate the notorious traffic bottlenecks of the airport's central terminal horseshoe roadway. The APM route connects three designated stations within the Central Terminal Area (CTA) to three off-airport multi-modal facilities: the newly constructed LAX/Metro Transit Center (providing direct turn-up-and-go rail transfers to the Metro C Line and K Line), the Economy Parking facility, and the sprawling Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) facility—one of the largest rental car structures in the world spanning over 6.3 million square feet.
During peak operating hours from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM, driverless trainsets will operate every two minutes with an end-to-end trip time of under ten minutes, delivering fully predictable travel times for travelers, flight crews, and airport personnel alike.
Alstom Innovia Fleet and Regenerative Zero-Emission Technology
The system is powered by a dedicated fleet of 49 Alstom Innovia 300 automated vehicles configured into four-car trainsets. Each four-car consist comfortably accommodates up to 200 passengers alongside luggage carts and baggage, featuring expansive panoramic picture windows, multi-lingual digital arrival monitors, and level-access wide double doors facilitating smooth boarding for passengers with disabilities and rolling baggage.
Engineered for maximum sustainability, the trainsets utilize regenerative braking systems that feed recovered kinetic energy directly back into the traction power grid. The entire electrical demand of the elevated guideway is supplemented by solar photovoltaic arrays mounted on maintenance buildings and station canopies, earning the project an Envision Gold rating for sustainable civil infrastructure.
Removing 117,000 Daily Vehicle Miles and Driving Regional Growth
Municipal transit planners estimate that commissioning the Automated People Mover will eliminate more than 117,000 private vehicle miles and thousands of polluting commercial shuttle bus trips from airport access roads every single day. LAWA leadership emphasized that the impending launch marks the culmination of years of rigorous engineering and contractor collaboration, establishing a world-class passenger gateway that elevates passenger convenience, slashes regional greenhouse emissions, and anchors Southern California’s next era of global connectivity.
