SAN DIEGO, California — Demonstrating the power of converting surplus municipal transit property into vibrant neighborhood housing, the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and developer Affirmed Housing formally broke ground on September 28, 2026, on Spring View, a $116 million affordable housing development.

Located immediately adjacent to the Spring Street Trolley Station, the development will deliver 145 deed-restricted homes for individuals and families earning between 30 and 60 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI). The sustainable community features rooftop solar photovoltaic systems, on-site early education classrooms, family computer labs, and complimentary transit passes for all residents. San Diego City Council and MTS leadership noted that building high-density affordable housing steps from light rail tracks reduces vehicle miles traveled and guarantees permanent transit access for working families.

SANDAG and MTS Expand Route 992 Airport Express Frequency to 15 Minutes

Simultaneously upgrading airport connectivity, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and MTS implemented expanded service schedules for MTS Bus Route 992, linking Downtown San Diego's Santa Fe Depot and America Plaza directly to Terminals 1 and 2 at San Diego International Airport. Under the upgraded timetable, low-floor airport express buses now operate at 15-minute frequencies daily until 1:00 a.m., offering a reliable, cost-effective alternative for airline travelers and airport concession workers.

Airport Transit Connection People Mover Alternatives Advance

The bus upgrades serve as an immediate bridge while SANDAG advances environmental and procurement reviews for the permanent Airport Transit Connection (ATC). Having recently narrowed 17 regional alternatives to five finalists—including three Automated People Mover (APM) alignments—regional officials are working to safeguard $350 million in dedicated airline capital, targeting groundbreaking before 2028.
