Morley-Ellenbrook Line Brings Rapid Heavy Rail to Perth's North-Eastern Suburbs

PERTH, Western Australia — In the largest single passenger rail expansion in Western Australia’s history, Premier Roger Cook and the METRONET project team have achieved full passenger revenue service along the transformational 21-kilometre Morley-Ellenbrook Line. Branching from the recently reconstructed Bayswater junction station, the high-speed electrified rail corridor delivers five state-of-the-art stations: Morley, Noranda, Ballajura, Whiteman Park, and Ellenbrook.

The project represents a generational milestone for north-eastern suburban communities that previously lacked direct rail transit. Commuters traveling between Ellenbrook and the Perth Central Business District (CBD) now enjoy a predictable 30-minute transit journey, cutting peak-hour car commute times by more than half.

Locally Built Electric Railcars and Integrated Multimodal Hubs

The Morley-Ellenbrook service is powered by Western Australia's next-generation C-series electric railcars, proudly manufactured and assembled by local workers at the specialized Bellevue Railcar Assembly Facility. Operating with six-car sets capable of carrying 1,200 passengers, the trains feature regenerative braking systems, modern passenger information screens, and integrated bicycle storage bays.

Each of the five new stations functions as a multi-modal transport hub, featuring dedicated high-frequency feeder bus interchanges, expansive park-and-ride facilities with electric vehicle charging stations, and protected shared pedestrian and cycle paths linked into regional trails.

Yanchep Northern Rail Extension Anchors Rapid Coastal Growth

The launch of the Morley-Ellenbrook line follows closely on the heels of the 14.5-kilometre Yanchep Rail Extension, which extended the metropolitan rail network northward from Butler to introduce new stations at Alkimos, Eglinton, and Yanchep. Together, these infrastructure megaprojects have delivered over 35 kilometres of new electrified passenger tracks and eliminated numerous dangerous road-rail level crossings across metropolitan Perth.

State infrastructure authorities affirmed that the combined investments are supporting over 10,000 direct and indirect engineering, construction, and manufacturing jobs across Western Australia.
