The substantial allocation is part of a nationwide $84.4 million federal aviation investment package dedicated to airfield safety, operational resilience, and environmental mitigation at major municipal airports.

The multimillion-dollar grant represents one of the largest single federal airport investments awarded in Texas during this fiscal cycle, providing vital capital to reconstruct and modernize aging storm drainage networks beneath SAT's active airfield pavement and taxiways.

Reconstructing Airfield Drainage and Stormwater Basins

The project will execute comprehensive civil engineering upgrades to the airport's stormwater conveyance channels, subsurface culverts, and retention infrastructure surrounding Runway 13R/31L and central flight movement corridors. By replacing aging concrete storm drains with high-capacity reinforced systems, the airport will eliminate standing water hazards, mitigate runway edge erosion, and protect sensitive ground radar installations during severe South Texas convective storms.
