TxDOT Launches Major Loop 1604 North Weekend Closures as San Pedro Springs Park Conservancy Forms

Extensive Weekend Traffic Closures on Loop 1604 North Corridor

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has initiated extensive full-weekend highway closures along North Bexar County’s primary commuter loop as part of the ongoing multi-million-dollar Loop 1604 North Expansion Project. Commencing at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, September 25, through 5:00 a.m. on Monday, September 28, all westbound mainlanes between Stone Oak Parkway and Blanco Road are completely shut to vehicular traffic.

Engineering crews are utilizing the uninterrupted 56-hour work window to set structural steel bridge girders, pour concrete deck slabs, and reconfigure entry ramps for the future four-level direct-connect flyover interchange. TxDOT traffic safety officers have established signed frontage-road detours and deployed electronic variable message signs to redirect drivers toward alternate routes via I-10 and Loop 410.

Launch of the San Pedro Springs Park Conservancy

While highway modernization moves forward on the northern perimeter, downtown San Antonio celebrated a major historic preservation milestone with the official founding of the San Pedro Springs Park Conservancy. Established on September 24, the non-profit civic alliance is tasked with spearheading long-term ecological restoration, tree canopy preservation, and cultural programming for Texas's oldest designated municipal public park.

City leaders, urban historians, and community advocates gathered at the park's historic spring basin to inaugurate the initiative. The conservancy will partner with the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department to secure philanthropic endowments and federal grants to restore historic limestone retaining walls, modernize pedestrian lighting, and enhance natural spring water flows that have sustained regional communities for over three centuries.

Weekend Cultural Celebrations in Hemisfair

The civic milestone coincides with a bustling cultural weekend across the city. Downtown parks are hosting the 43rd Annual Jazz’SAlive Festival at Civic Park at Hemisfair, welcoming tens of thousands of music lovers for free open-air performances by international jazz headliners.
