Western Australia Delivers METRONET Armadale Line Elevation and Byford Electric Rail Corridor

Modernizing Western Australia's Oldest Passenger Rail Corridor

PERTH, Australia — The Western Australian Government and the METRONET infrastructure agency have solidified full operational delivery across the historic Armadale Line Transformation, achieving one of the largest heavy civil rail modernizations in Western Australia's history. The multi-billion-dollar infrastructure campaign has replaced aging ground-level track with continuous elevated rail viaducts, permanently abolishing 13 congested road-rail level crossings and unlocking long-standing urban bottlenecks across Perth’s southeastern commuter belt.

By raising passenger rail tracks onto sleek concrete viaduct structures, civil engineers have completely eliminated dangerous level-crossing boom gates at key traffic arteries including Oats Street, Welshpool Road, Mint Street, and Hamilton Street. The removal of these barriers has immediately relieved acute peak-hour road congestion for more than 30,000 daily motorists while drastically improving public safety for pedestrians, school children, and emergency response vehicles.

The 7-Kilometre 'Long Park' and Six New Elevated Stations

Beneath the elevated railway, the project has converted over six hectares of previously vacant, severed rail land into a vibrant, 7-kilometre linear public greenway known as the 'Long Park'. The newly landscaped corridor features illuminated dual-direction walking and cycling paths, outdoor fitness zones, basketball half-courts, skate parks, native botanical gardens, and community event plazas equipped with solar-powered charging totems.

Six brand-new architecturally designed elevated stations—Carlisle, Oats Street, Queens Park, Cannington, Beckenham, and Armadale—have been delivered to world-class transit standards. Each facility features full step-free accessibility with dual high-speed elevators, escalators, weather-sheltered platform canopies, secured bicycle storage cages, and modern passenger information displays powered by 5G-connected dynamic transit networks.

Expanding Electric Rail to the Rapidly Growing Byford Community

Complementing the viaduct corridor, the Byford Rail Extension has brought Transperth's electrified passenger rail network eight kilometres further south, providing the burgeoning outer-metropolitan community of Byford with its first direct electric rail connection to the Perth Central Business District. The newly built Byford Station includes modern multi-bay bus interchanges and expansive park-and-ride facilities.

The transformed corridor operates with modern High-Capacity Signalling (HCS) technology and energy-efficient C-Series electric multiple-unit trainsets manufactured locally at METRONET’s Bellevue rail facility. Transport authorities noted that the project sets a high standard for transit-led urban revitalization, ensuring fast, safe, and dependable mobility for generations across Western Australia.
