Austin City Council Adopts $6.6 Billion Budget with Major Transit Investments

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin City Council has formally adopted a record $6.6 billion municipal budget for the 2026–2027 fiscal year, dedicating critical capital investments toward mass transit expansion, workforce housing, and a unified public safety emergency communications framework.

The approved fiscal package reflects months of community deliberation and aims to accommodate the Texas capital's rapid population and commercial growth. A significant portion of municipal capital outlays will directly complement the Austin Transit Partnership (ATP), which is advancing procurement and engineering for the city's initial light-rail line connecting downtown corridors with high-density suburban hubs.

In addition to transit funding, the budget establishes dedicated appropriations for the newly funded Office of Joint Emergency Communications. The initiative is designed to streamline emergency response times, modernizing call-routing technology and expanding staffing capacity across central 911 centers following municipal oversight reviews conducted earlier this year.

Affordable housing and tenant stabilization programs secured over $100 million in combined direct appropriations and bond allocations. City leaders emphasized that expanding subsidized housing inventory near future transit stops is crucial to mitigating displacement pressures across East Austin and South Congress districts.
