Miami Airport Amazon Cargo Plane Crash Kills Five

A major aviation investigation is underway in Miami after an Amazon cargo aircraft crashed while landing at Miami International Airport, killing at least five people and injuring five others.

The Boeing 767 was operated by 21 Air for Amazon and was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it overran the runway on Sunday. The aircraft struck vehicles after leaving the runway, creating a major emergency response at one of the busiest airports in the United States.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are examining several possible factors behind the crash. Early questions include where the aircraft touched down, weather conditions, wind direction and the aircraft's mechanical and maintenance history. Officials have not announced a final cause.

The aircraft was about 32 years old and had originally been built as a passenger aircraft before being converted for cargo operations. That history is expected to form part of the investigation, although there is currently no indication that the age or conversion caused the accident.

The crash also disrupted operations at Miami International Airport, with airport authorities temporarily closing runways while emergency crews dealt with the wreckage and surrounding damage.

Investigators will likely rely on flight-data information, cockpit recordings, aircraft components and eyewitness accounts as they reconstruct the final moments of the flight.

The incident has attracted national attention because of the number of fatalities and the involvement of an Amazon-operated cargo flight. Amazon has expressed condolences to the victims and said it is cooperating with investigators.
