Bexar County Jail Annex Fire Injures Two Deputies and Inmate in San Antonio

Small trash fire sends three people for medical care at North Comal Street facility

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Two Bexar County deputies and an inmate received medical care after a fire at the Bexar County jail annex on North Comal Street on Monday, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire was reported at about 5:40 p.m. at the detention facility. Authorities said the three people suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The sheriff’s office did not immediately release further information about their conditions or identify the inmate or deputies involved.

The San Antonio Fire Department said firefighters extinguished a small trash fire and then worked to remove smoke from an elevator shaft. The sheriff’s office said the fire was contained to the elevator-shaft area.

Emergency crews responding to fires inside correctional facilities must address both the fire itself and smoke conditions in secured areas, where movement is more restricted than in most buildings. In this case, officials described the blaze as small and limited to one area of the annex, but smoke in the elevator shaft required additional clearing work.

Authorities had not said what caused the trash fire, whether the elevator shaft sustained damage, or whether jail operations were disrupted. No additional injuries were reported in the information released Monday.
