Man arrested less than an hour after reported argument led to shooting

CHICAGO, Illinois — A 25-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a Tuesday night shooting in the South Shore neighborhood left a 27-year-old man critically injured, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Police identified the defendant as Marquise Earskines. He faces a charge of attempted murder, aggravated battery while discharging a firearm and a misdemeanor domestic battery count in connection with the shooting in the 7300 block of South Blackstone Avenue.

The shooting was reported at about 8:43 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Investigators allege that Earskines and the 27-year-old man began arguing in the block before Earskines shot the victim in the left arm.

Emergency responders took the wounded man to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, police said. Authorities did not release additional information about the nature of the dispute or detail the relationship between the two men.

South Shore shooting led to attempted murder case

The South Shore shooting resulted in multiple felony allegations, including attempted murder and aggravated battery involving the discharge of a firearm. Those charges are accusations, and Earskines is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Police said Earskines was taken into custody less than an hour after the shooting. The swift arrest meant authorities did not report an ongoing search for a suspect following the incident.

The 7300 block of South Blackstone Avenue is in Chicago’s South Shore community area on the city’s South Side. The case underscores the potentially rapid escalation of interpersonal arguments involving firearms, with the victim requiring critical medical care after being shot in the arm.

Earskines is scheduled to appear for a detention hearing Friday. Police have not announced further details about the investigation, and no updated condition for the wounded man was immediately provided.
