Live Oak County, Texas Prepares for Major Flood Risks as Nueces River Rises

Live Oak County, Texas is on high alert as emergency responders prepare for significant flooding expected along the Nueces River. As of Thursday evening, County Road 436 has been closed due to rising water levels, with County Road 438 also closed due to flood risks. County Judge James Liska emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "The Nueces River is on the rise." Currently, the river is flowing above 35 feet, with forecasts suggesting it could crest near 40 feet by the weekend.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings, indicating that flooding could extend miles from the river's main channel, potentially impacting homes in the flood plains from Three Rivers to Lake Corpus Christi. At the anticipated crest of 40 feet, the NWS warned that numerous homes and properties could be inundated.

For residents in need of shelter, George West Junior High School at 904 Houston St. is open 24 hours a day, and pets are welcome. The NWS reported already significant flooding, with up to 4 feet of water reported in the River Creek Acres Subdivision, affecting several residences. Other areas, like Kellner Camp along County Road 336, are also experiencing severe flooding, obstructing access to local neighborhoods.

Community members are advised to stay vigilant as floodwaters continue to rise. Liska cautioned against complacency, stressing that even if homes remain dry, residents could become trapped due to impassable roads. "Your road may end up like this," he noted, referring to the significant flooding observed on County Road 438. Local subdivisions along the Nueces River are urged to prepare for escalating flood conditions.
