Alamo Ranch Parkway Set for $134 Million Freeway Expansion

The Alamo Regional Mobility Authority has proposed a $133.5 million project to transform Alamo Ranch Parkway into a freeway, similar to Wurzbach Parkway, to address increasing traffic congestion on San Antonio's far West Side. The expansion will cover a 2½-mile stretch between Loop 1604 and Calaveras Way, increasing the number of lanes from four to eight.

The design includes two main lanes and a two-lane frontage road in each direction, with future plans for additional lanes to accommodate population growth. Current main lanes will be repurposed as frontage roads, and new bridges will be constructed to allow traffic to bypass busy intersections with Lone Star Parkway and Alamo Parkway.

Shared-use paths for pedestrians and cyclists will also be added. The project is expected to begin construction by the end of 2027 and be completed by winter 2030. Funding will come from a $10 fee on new vehicle registrations in Bexar County.

Traffic volume on Alamo Ranch Parkway has surged from 6,460 vehicles per day in 2010 to 36,324 in 2025, with projections estimating it could exceed 122,480 by 2049. Without the expansion, travel times during peak hours could increase significantly, while the expansion aims to reduce morning rush hour travel time to three minutes.
