New York City Under Flood Watch as Heavy Rainstorm Approaches

New York City is under a flood watch from Tuesday morning until Wednesday morning as an unusually powerful storm is expected to bring 2 to 4 inches of rain across the five boroughs. Forecasters predict that the storm will begin Tuesday afternoon, with the heaviest downpours continuing into early Wednesday.

Senior AccuWeather Meteorologist Matt Rinde noted that this storm is atypical for late July, as it features a developing low pressure system more commonly seen in the fall. The National Weather Service has warned of damaging wind gusts between 25 to 30 miles per hour, which could lead to downed power lines and trees.

Residents are advised to avoid walking or driving through floodwaters and to prepare for potential evacuations if necessary. This storm follows a recent flash flood event on July 18 that disrupted air travel and closed major expressways in the city.
