Harris County DA Reports Lack of Evidence from Federal Investigators in ICE Shooting Case

Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare stated that federal investigators have not provided evidence related to the fatal shooting of 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by an ICE agent in Houston on July 7. Teare expressed frustration at the lack of communication from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) during a congressional hearing on Friday, where he confirmed that his office has not received the name of the agent involved in the incident.

During the hearing, U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia questioned Teare about the identity of the shooter, to which he replied that neither the DHS Office of Inspector General nor ICE had disclosed this information. The shooting has raised concerns among Houston's Hispanic community, prompting discussions about ICE's enforcement tactics and transparency.

Teare also criticized the FBI for unsealing a search warrant on the same day it was signed, which suggested the presence of methamphetamine in Salgado Araujo's van. However, family members have stated that the substance was actually salt used for hydration during construction work. Salgado Araujo was reportedly in the process of legalizing his immigration status after moving from Mexico to Texas 35 years ago.

The FBI and DHS have not released additional information, citing an ongoing investigation. Teare indicated that his office would also refrain from disclosing details of its investigation, and he could not provide a timeline for its completion.
